Finger Food!

Around 8 to 9 months your baby’s dexterity improves and suddenly you can begin to give them little small pieces of food to feed themselves.  Be sure to always watch your child.  Here are some of my favourites!

Cut up fruit – blueberries, grapes, apples, banana, avocado can all be cut up into small pieces for your baby to eat.  If you find that you baby has difficulty eating slippery banana or avocado, grind up some cereal in your coffee grinder and roll the fruit in the ‘dust’.

Chopped Veggies –  Get those veggies in while you can!  Steam vegetables like broccoli, carrots, sweet potato and peas until they are soft, then run them under water to cool.  Give them to your baby to pick up and eat!

Brown Rice Pasta – Wheat-free and available in fun shapes, Brown Rice pasta is a great finger food.   My favourite brand is Tinkyada, it cooks up very nicely.

I like these better than Cheerios. They have whole food ingredients and are organic.

THis great Canadian Company has some great cereals for baby (& you!). Try adding their Rice Puffs, Millet Puffs or Rice Millet Flakes to your baby's snack mix!

Cereal – Any cereal makes a good finger food as long as it contains whole food ingredients and does not contain wheat or corn.  Both wheat and corn are highly allergenic foods and they are in almost all processed foods today.   Keeping them out of your child’s diet for as long as you can is only beneficial to your baby’s health.  My favourite brand of cereal is Natures Path, it contains whole food ingredients and they have a great variety of types of cereals.  And they are a Canadian Company!

Most of all when it is time for finger foods it is time for you to let your baby explore new textures and shapes of food.  What ever you think your baby can easily chew is fair game.  Give it to your child to try, just be sure to keep a close eye on your child.   But most of all, have fun with it!

**Always watch for choking and be ready to do a quick finger scoop if you need to quickly get some food out of your baby’s mouth.**

Breakfast O’s – I found this great cereal called Breakfast O’s that has whole food ingredients (much better than Cheerios).  It looks like a Cheerio, tastes like a Cheerio, but contains all whole food ingredients.  It may be more expensive, but babies will not go through a box too quickly.

I am not sure about the East-End, but I live in Roncesvalles and both health food stores here (Evergreen & Qi) carry them. They have other locations; Evergreen’s 2nd store is at Bathurst & St. Clair, Qi’s 2nd store is Bloor & Christie, I would think that WHole Foods and Noah’s would carry it as well and Noah’s has stores all over. You should call your local health food store to see if they carry it. Cheers! LkM

I managed to find the Breakfast O’s and the Camilia by Boiron for teething from a health food store in the Beach. Thanks again.
