Finally! A Teething Biscuit!

July-August 019 Since introducing my little guy to food, I searched high and low for a teething biscuit that met my requirements: no wheat, very little added sugar, doesn’t become soggy!

These are actually difficult requirements to meet.  Once you take wheat out of the equation all you are left with are Baby Mum-Mums and rice cakes.  I did find a great little rice cake from Heinz and wrote about it (Click here!).  And as for Baby Mum-Mums, they are okay but I found they were messy.  So without further ado, here is my recipe… easy to make, no refined sugar, no wheat, not soggy and definitely tasty!

These are fine once your child is 8 months old.

Oat-Barley Biscuits

  • 1/3 C raisins
  • 1 1/3 C rolled oats (quick cooking)
  • 1 1/3 C barley flour (can be found in the bulk section of your health food store or bulk store)
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ C sunflower oil
  • ½ C water
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup

Preheat oven to 400°.

Place the raisins in your food processor and pulse until the raisins are chopped so fine they form a large lump.  Remove the raisins from the processor and set aside in a bowl.  (You don’t need to clean the processor at this point)

Put the rolled oats in the processor and pulse until you have a fine flour.

Add the barley flour, baking soda and salt and pulse to combine.

Add the raisins and pulse until the raisins are well-mixed in the flour.

In a measuring cup combine the oil, water and maple syrup.

While your food processor is running, pour the liquid slowly into the processor in the hole at the top of the processor.

Pulse until a dough is formed and it runs around the outside of the bowl.

Turn the dough out onto parchment paper and roll out to ½ Cm thin.  Using a cookie cutter, cut the dough into shapes.  Or run a knife along the dough to form squares or diamonds.

Place in the oven and bake for 12 minutes.
